When I get a craving for a food, it is usually a selection replete with rich and savory flavors. The best way to describe the components of these tastes are with the words umami and fat. I named my first lot of creative efforts in the realm of food and beverage after the sensations I seek most when hungry and thirsty.
Originally I had wanted Umami and Fat to be a website dedicated to my experiences in dining around the North Bay Area, but in terms of my interests, I found that notion incredibly limiting. I realized that most of my life revolves around food and drinks of all kinds and origins. Since I spend a good bit of energy gardening, it would seem short of forthcoming to only post about cooking; similarly, since I work at a restaurant, it wouldn't be indicative of my participation in the industry to only write about dining out. For me, inspiration to write and record comes from a litany of places, so I decided that Umami and Fat would need to encompass the satellite subjects of food and drink: time and place.
This first post is an attempt to explain what will be found in the time to come on Umami and Fat, and a look around the other pages will paint a clearer picture of my intention to address the numerous methods of conveying the experiences I've had and found meaningful. I am excited to share my life in food, and I hope to gently push open and peek through doors to the incredible connections I have found to be inherent in the vast grapevine of the industry in which I'm involved.
Please do check back for updates, and feel free to say hello via my Contact page, should you have something you'd like to let me know.
Fondly and tipsy,
Vanessa Pritchard
